Join the Parade
The Parade is where Carnival really starts with a bang! The more floats we have, the more fun we have, so get involved and let us know what your float will be!
What is a float?
There are so many options for how you can create a float:
Vehicle powered - a trailer pulled by a tractor, steam engine, van or car
People powered - walking, skating, scooting alone or in groups
Pedal powered - bicycles, unicycles or carts
Animal powered - horses or donkeys (must be very used to crowds)
Mobility powered - mobility aids including scooters,
And if you have other ideas, just let us know - the most important element is enthusiasm!
Want to build a float?
Building a Carnival float is a fun project. Whether you work alone or with a group, you can create something truly memorable and enjoy yourself while you do it.
There are so many ways to create a float, from the small individual walking float to the large trailers pulled by vehicles. And if you are smart about your design and build, it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Prizes for the best floats
A panel of judges will assess the floats across the following categories:
-
Best Mobile Float
-
Best Pedestrian Float
-
Best Child Costume
-
Best Adult Costume
The winners will be presented with commemorative plaques to mark the occasion.
The Parade starts with a gathering at the Green, then heads down Front Road. It then visits the residents of Woodchurch House before heading back up Front Road, onto Lower Road. Lower Road is then followed back to the Green.
The total distance is about 1.5 miles. There will be jump on/off points along the route for anyone who doesn't feel able to do the whole route.

FAQs
What if I don't have access to a vehicle or materials?
Speak to people, get together with friends & family, someone always knows someone else who has many of the items needed. If you contact your local farmer & ask them if they can help you, many are happy to let you have access to a tractor & trailer.
Will it be expensive?
There will obviously be some cost involved, but be resourceful. Working as a group can often reduce much of the cost, if you all work together.
What about Health & Safety?
Yes there are H&S issues & we give all entries the basic simple rules we ask you to follow, but these rules really are common sense. As event organisers we want everyone to be safe, including those taking part, & the public who watch, but also to have fun.
When should I start bulding my float?
The time to start thinking of making a float is ideally four or five months before the carnival. Again working as a group, you can start to collect the things you need, then put your ideas together with an aim at starting to build the float approx. two weeks before carnival.
Do I need insurance?
No, there is no need for you to take out additional insurance. Again, providing you adhere to the simple H&S rules, act responsibly etc, you will be fine & you will have great fun. The provider of your vehicle will need to be covered for the vehicle insurance.
Can I use Red Diesel?
We have sought advice from the police on this issue and can advise on an individual basis if you intend to use an agricultural vehicle. Please contact us for further advice.
